ford 4000 carb

1970 ford 4000 3 cyl. gas holley carb i have points and timing set according to book not using timing light, i have it idling about 700 to 800 rpm to get it to run without hesitating i had to set needle on carb 2 turns out. is this too rich? or is it ok? also i bought a used autombile timing light. can this be used on my tractor? if so is there anyone that can tell me how to use it on my tractor? tryed reading instructions but makes no sense. isnt a car timing marks visible from above where a tractor is through an inspection hole? thx for anyones help

Its been a long time since I owned a 4000 three cylinder gas tractor but I believe the Holly carburetor is a fixed jet carburetor. The adjustment screw only controls the idle air, it has no effect on the power jet which is a fixed jet. Adjust the idle air adjustment screw to give the smoothest idle at about 500RPMs. Joe

thx joe so are u saying it makes no difference how many turns out the needle is? yhe manuel says start with one turn out. do i keep turning it out till i get my 500 rpms thx

There is also an idle speed adjustment screw on the carburetor that determines the idle speed of the engine. It keeps the throttle plate from completely closing at idle. It is located on the back side of the carburetor near where the governor linkage connects to the carburator. That screw controls idle speed, the needle controls the idle mixture. Hope this helps you.

set mixture screw for smothest idle.. usually around 1 to 1&3/4 turns is normal.

timing marks are on flywheel.. There is a little metal cover that you open to see the flywheel and marks.. IIRC near the starter, but its been way too many years..The only gas tractor I have is loaned out.

does a lil choke kill the hesitation / smooth it out.

if so.. time for a rebuild or a zenith..

thx sound guy carberator has already been built. pulling the choke out makes it worse i can get it to run good by turning the mixture screw out 2 turns. i just didnt know if it was turned out too far? also there are a couple zenith carbs on this site didnt know which one mine wold take? mine is a 1970 4000 3 cyl. gas thx again

remember.. when you go to the 4000 ford parts section, you are seeing parts for the prior 4 cyl,a nd the 3 yl.

int he 3 cyl.. there are 2 zenith listed. each shows what OEM it repalces.

chek your number and see which you have / should have if you go that route
