'49 Ford 8N Air Cleaner dis-assembly

OK, maybe I'm just not holding my mouth right, but HOW on EARTH do you get the retainer that holds the air cleaner filler removed from one of these sons of guns? I've seen several posts on washing out the filler elements of the air cleaners, but they just say that they removed it, unrolled it, and washed it out.

My question is how do you remove it? Or do I need to spend the 85 - 100 and buy a whole new assembly? Urrrrgggh!

And just to be clear, here's the air cleaner I am referring to.

Thanks!

If'n you can't get the metal floss out to clean.. don't drop 100$ to get a ne wone.. just put the entire assy in a parts washer or 5g bucket, and fill with yuor favorite solvent and agitate and rinse / refill till clean.

Once cleaned.. let air dry, and then dribble a lil oil intot he floss from the bottom, then reinstall, and refill oil cup.

Thanks Soundguy.

I appreciate the quick response too. I was wondering if that would help remove any of the debris that may have floated up there ... it was a little ... um ... chunky looking in the oil cup.

fwiw, i like to unroll the mesh and place it on clean ground. then use an air gun to blow the material out, sometimes lifting it up and looking through for more. works great and takes seconds.

Thanks for the heads up on that ... for future notice -- anyone have the same issues as I was (not being smarter than the retainer), you bend the little arms INTO the mesh and away from the body, and then sorta slide/pry the retainer up the inner tube.

I got it apart, took a good look at it, and decided to order the lower cup, wire meshes, retainer and gasket kit from external_link. I figure for 30 bucks, I can make sure no hunks of crud get into the carb. It was pretty chunked up, the upper air-cleaner screen (behind the louvered hood entrance) was missing, so I just needed to get this thing all squared away.

BTW -- John Smith gave me the heads up on the retainer removal. Like I said, sometimes you just have to be smarter than the retainer. LOL.

After struggling, I'm going this route! Question: Is there a low or medium priced solvent night & day better than just puting it in 5g of gasoline??
