Hello guy's - Once again a big thank you to all who have responded to my past question's you are a ton of help. Now my problem after finding all the noises and leaks after this rebuild is that anything above a idol if you are in gear or not the governor hunt's up and down. the only note I can find on it is the length of the rod between the governor and the throttle on the carb is supposed to be 17 3/16 of an inch mines at 17 that is the only adjustment they talk about any idea's???? I'm stumped !!! Thanks for any help!!! there is a screw on the governor housing but I don't see anything in the book about it. Once again thank's guy's

Any governor adjustment on those things is internal. To be honest I don't think there is any adjustment other than mabey spring placement on the governor as I don't think there's a buffer screw to play with.
As long as it runs, the breather line is clear and the pump has oil in the cambox, don't worry about it. When it gets to be a severe problem, get the pump rebuilt.

LOL. I should have read that a bit closer...

Still not much adjustment for hunting tho... unless it's got an air leak.

I don't know myself. I think I've only ever seen one 5000 gaspot in my life. I can't imagine what it must be like to feed something like that.

It would give you nightmares...
I used to run an IH 615 combine that had the 6 cylinder C263 @ 80 hp gross... which is about the same as a 5000. It swallowed a steady 5 gph or a bit better regardless of what you were doing.

This one is a gas 233 4 cylinder. I wouldn't be so concerned but even just moving the machine around the area unless you are at a low idle it will surge up and down and it is really severe. when I had the engine tore down for rebuild two of the governor balls fell from the holder they are in but I did not see any real signs of wear or any distortion. I can't believe that 3/16 of an inch would make any difference.

Hunting with a spark engine is not necessarly the fault of the governor... What does the engine do if you unhook the carb rod from the governor? Will it hold a steady idle? You may find the real problem is that the engine is running rough anyhow... and the governor is trying to compensate but on gas engines they seldom compensate quickly enough... Try spraying some ether around the intake manifold joints above the carb to check for vacuum leaks and make sure the carb itself is not suffering from plugged jets in the idle circuit...
Or it could be that the governor weight assembly is just worn out... I don't care for the idea that if fell apart in your hand...

Rod - I have not tried disconnecting the rod between the gov. and carb but when I get to it again on Thursday I'll give it a try and watch the linkage while I run the carb by hand. only two of the balls fell out the rest stayed in place which puzzled me but I could not see anything wrong but I am no expert. I will also try adjusting the linkage. when I got the tractor to rebuild it did not run including no wiring. I'll repost if I have any luck. Thank's for your reply

I don't have a repair manual in front of me, but I do believe that there are very specific instructions for adjusting that governor linkage. I know there was for a 3000 I did once, and it made a world of difference.

I'm not sure whether the 5000 is the same, but on the 2000/3000/4000 models they changed the governor linkage design part way through the production run, so there are actually 2 different procedures depending on which version of the linkage that you have.
