Another interesting set of rings.

The top end of this 192 gasser had a rattle in it. Long screwdriver to the ear said #3.
Not all the time but occasionally on deceleration.
So I was looking the pistons, rings, etc over carefully as I pulled them and found this on the second ring on #3 piston.
Looks like the ring shattered into several pieces and the pieces beat the ring groove wider in that spot.
Piston is ruined of course but the bore looks pretty good yet. A guy could probably ream the ridge and hone it good and be ok.
The rest of the rings/pistons look normal.
Not much ridge in the bores.
Anyone have an idea why a ring would shatter like this?

Never seen anything quite like that.
Did you rotate the top ring? Reason I ask is the failure is directly below the gap in the top ring.

I think Mark is on the right track....broken (or at least hurt) during installation.
Could the end gap have been too tight?
