49 Ford 8N Wiring question

I just purchased this beauty and she runs like a
top.I figure she'll stop too once I get the brakes
rebuilt! She's converted to 12v with an automotive
alternator, make unknown. Wiring is my problem.
There are numerous cut off wires, some taped, some
not. Where I think the light switch should be
there is a door bell push button! Yup, you read
that right. It has a wire running from the
alternator to it and on to the ammeter. Nothing
happens when I push the door bell. There is a
light switch mounted near the gas tank that you
need to open the hatch to get to. I expect to
correct the wiring sooner then later because as
good as she runs now if she develops an electrical
problem, I'm sunk. Am I correct in that the light
switch should be to the left of the steering
column, next to the accessory light toggle switch?

the door bell button is to wake up the alternator to let know it should begin charging.

I'd wager you have a Delco 10SI "3 wire" alternator and that the wire from the door bell button goes to the #1 pin on the edge of the alternator. The alternator requires a momentary voltage "kick" to start it charging. There are several ways to accomplish this. On yours you start the engine then press the door bell button to start the alternator charging.

This same function is usually accomplished by a diode or "idiot light" that is automatic.

Next to impossible for use to help you since who knows how the person wired it and believe me I have seen some wiring on things that blow the mind and why they did it the way they did makes no sense some times. As for the door bell well I think JMOR hit it on the head

Thanks, This discussion makes sense (sort of!)But you can see why I feel I'm best off to rewire it to spec. so I can follow a wiring diagram when there is an issue.
Am I correct on the location of the light switch?
What size fuse goes in the light switch?
My Model A is jealous I'm not working on her.
Thanks so much for the help.

Google "wiring diagrams by JMOR".
Correct, easy to read and no doorbell required!
I put the light switch where ever there is an
existing hole so I don't have to drill any more.
Normally that is to the left of the steering column.
Size of fuse would depend on the lights used.
I use a 15 amp fuse in mine.
