Some smoke (blowby) is normal, and can look like a lot in the right sunlight. Don't jump to conclusions based only on what you see.
The most accurate way to tell if it is excessive is to run the engine on a dyno and monitor crankcase backpressure. If that is not an option, I would not worry too much if the engine starts well and has good power. On the other hand, if you can see or feel pulses out of the blowby tube, that is NOT a good sign.
