Ford 4000 3 cyl diesel starting procedure and gauges

Finally looked at and drove the infamous 3 cyl 4000. Tach and hour meter worked, is the left gauge the fuel and the right gauge the temp? Is left light the charging system? If the generator is working should it go out? Is the right light the oil pressure? Should it be on before starting and go off after starting?

The fuel was very low and very old. Battery not the best. Tractor started hard, gave it a shot of ether and then it ran OK. Started hot OK. Is the proper cold starting procedure, fuel lever at idle and then crank till it starts?

Still trying to decide how many more problems I need!

Bill,
Yes fuel gauge on the left, temp on right.
Diesel can be very old - like even 10 years and still run fine.
How long has it been since the tractor was run?
I usually give mine about 20% throttle to start it when it is cold. Once it coughs to life immediately throttle down to idle and let it warm up for a minute or so.
Can't remember which light is oil pressure warning and which is generator. Both should go out immediately after the engine starts though.
4000 is a very good, very reliable machine. Parts are readily available - both from NH and aftermarket.

yes to both

Is left light the charging system?

yes

If the generator is working should it go out?

yes

Is the right light the oil pressure?

yes

Should it be on before starting and go off after starting?

yes, out within 30 seconds

Avoid ether whenever possible, especially if the glow plug is operable, which should be on the start switch to the left rather than right turn, turn left for pre-heat, turn right for hot start, glowplug located in the intale manifold with a thermal valve, and fuel line

Started hot OK. Is the proper cold starting procedure, fuel lever at idle and then crank till it starts?

I personally give full throttle til start then down to idle, but use what works for your machine.
