NAA Starter Switch

The starter swith will not start the engine. However, when I connect an Ohmmeter from the switch terminal to ground the meter indicates continuity when the switch is depressed. I am
presently starting the engine with the button on the underside of the solenoid (and yes I know the dangers.

I don"t want to replace the switch if it is not necessary as it sounds like a pain

Appreciate any advice.

Sounds like your switch is working if it provides ground to the solenoid.
I don't see any need to replace it.
Did you actually check it all the way to the end of the wire
where it connects to the solenoid? Could be a break in the wire.
If the switch provides ground there, you may have a bad solenoid,
or the big wires reversed or possibly the wrong solenoid.
One not made for a tractor that is supposed to have power
applied to the small terminal instead of ground.
I see that happen quite often. Especially if it has two small terminals.

Ditto what Royse said on the wrong solenoid. There is a 2 post (small) that looks like the correct solenoid. Bit like Royse said it needs power to engage instead or ground to engage.

Check waiting all the way to the solenoid. If that is OK, pull solenoid and look for part number and cross reference or post back.

Ground the small terminal on the solenoid. If the starter cranks you have a bad wire going to the transmission.Naa solenoid should be mounted on the side of the battery box and have a metal case if original. This solenoid is the same one that was used on 37 up Ford cars and trucks.Dont mess with the transmission switch.Ground the terminal on the transmission switch to the cover. If the starter fails to crank then check the small wire to the solenoid. Its a simple circuit, know how it works and you can fix it.

I grounded the small terminal and nothing happened. The wire from the starter swith is good. This solenoid was ordered from a tractor supply and the box is labled NCA 11450A(the correct number for an NAA) and 1100-0216 and has only one small terminal. If it starts with the push button there must be some way to wire it to work from the starter switch.

he power to activate the coil is picked up internal to the solenoid from one of the 2 large terminals.........connect battery to wrong large terminal & it will not activate. If those 2 cables are wrong/reversed, a voltmeter at the small terminal will show nothing. If correct, voltmeter will show battery voltage.
Royce already said same, but I am emphasizing it.

The starter cable (left) and battery cable (right) are hooked up like they were before replacement. The new solenoid bracket can't be reversed (placed upside down) because the mounting bolts place it fouling the air filter bracket. Also, the push button would be on top to allow dirt, etc., to get in. However, I will try reversing the hookups and see what happens.

Ron, you said you have a ohmmeter there.
See if you measure continuity (or at least low resistance)
between the small terminal and the solenoid mounting bracket.
If you do, you probably have the wrong type solenoid.
It would not be the first time I've seen the wrong part in the
right package!
The correct solenoid should read low resistance between the
small terminal and the large post the battery hooks to.
