Hey every body.
I have a ford 4600 tractor that I need to decipher the Mod# and production #. I found them on the right side on the flat area by the starter. the numbers are as folowes,
DL113C
6E21B
*C506749*
my main problem is in the mod#, all of the numbers I have found on the internet has a letter then 4 numbers and a letter, my tractor has a "L" in the second spot (DL113C). I can see it clearly that it is an "L" . could ford have mistakenly used the L instead of "1" or is there a set of numbers I haven't found for to ID the Model number? I am not sure what Info I can supply you with to help , just let me know what is needed and I will try to get it . the one thing tell you is the paint is red primer then Yellow, then Orange, then Ford Blue. I got the colors from scraping the flat area where the numbers are stamped.
Thanks in advance
ErnieB

Ford model designations changed after 1975. The DL1 designation is for a 531 Industrial tractor, Low Center of Gravity (LCG) manufactured 1975-1976. 1=diesel, 3=live PTO, C=8 speed transmission. Check it out..

(quoted from post at 13:25:25 09/02/13) DL1 = 531 Industrial
1 = Diesel Vertical Exhaust
3 = 540 Independent PTO
C = 8x2 Manual Transmission

Mark

Thank you much Mark. I bough this tractor with the 3pt lift working good and when I tried to use it about 3 or 4 weeks after I got it home the lift will not pick up so I needed the year and all to get a manual for it. I realy appreciate the info.

Thanks very much. I need to get the manual to find out why the 3pt lift is not working. after doing an on-line search I found out there differences in the year models and wanted to get the proper book for this tractor.
Thanks ErnieB

The 531 was made form 1975 through 1981, but the DL1 designation was only used in 1975 and 1976. In late 1976 the designation changed to DL2 and remained that for the rest of the time the 531 was produced.

The Unit number, or date code is 6E21B, which says that the tractor rolled off the assembly line on May 21, 1976 during the day shift.

C506749 is the serial number, which is a 1976 serial number, and agrees with the unit number.

Thank you very much Sean, this info should be a lot of help.
I think it was you who said to another member that hitting the heavy spring by the draw bar with a sledge hammer would some times fix the problem of the lift not working. what does that do to help it work? is there something that could be stuck or clogged that will dislodge?
Thanks
Ernie B.

Sorry, wasn't me that posted anything bout hitting the spring with a sledge hammer. If it does help, I would guess that something was stuck inside and hitting it with the hammer un-stuck whatever it was that was stuck.

Oops, sorry , LOL. I have read lots of post about this same problem and must have gotten you nixed up with someone else.

Would I need to order a shop manual for the ford 4600 or the ford 531? I am a little confused!!!
Thanks

It really depends. The engine and transmission are basically the same between a 531 and a 4600. The front and rear axles are different though, so either manual would work for you if you are looking to work on the engine or trans.

The numbers that are stamped into it are stamped into the transmission housing, so that only tells you about the tractor that the transmission was in when it left the factory.

What made you think that it was a 4600 in the first place? If it has 4600 decals and is blue, then it might be a 4600 that had its transmission go bad and a transmission was swapped in from a 531.

Look on the underside of the right hood panel for a foil sticker. If it's still there and is readable, compare those numbers to the ones that you found stamped into the transmission. If they are different, post those and we can help you decipher them.

If the foil sticker is no longer there, or if it is illegible, post some pictures of the front axle and rear axles and the steering linkage and we might be able to help you figure it out.

thanks Sean, It is raining here now but will go look for the foil tag and may be get some pics. The tractor is blue with 4600 on the hood but the original color was orange, I scraped the hood, motor, trans and the rear differential, all was orange as the original color. I don't know if that may help or not. It is the 3 point lift I need to get a manual for.
Thanks for your help, I will get the other info soon

The original color doesn't matter much. the 4600's that were sold to the general public through the dealerships were blue, but Ford made a lot of fleet sales to city, county and state governments and even the military and other branches of the federal government, and Ford painted them whatever color was requested by the fleet purchaser. My 1973 4000 would have been blue if it had been sold at a dealership, but the first owner was a state highway department that used it for mowing, so it came from the factory painted international safety yellow with dark blue wheels and a dark blue stripe on each side of the hood where the "4000" decals would have been on a dealership version.
