Dual clutch job tranny engages first

I just finished the clutch job on my 73 3000. Now the tranny engages first when letting the clutch out, then at half way up the pto starts turning. I carefully followed the manual, setting the allen screw gaps to .052". According to the book this determines the pto engagement. The clutch was normal before this. All I did was replace the tranny clutch disc and reassemble with original pressure plate, no resurfacing was done. I tightened up the pto clutch allen screws some to get the .052". Other than the two clutches engaging at the wrong time it all works good. Not planning to split it again, just wondering what could have caused this, especially since it was fine before the split.

I don't have the manual in front of me, but I do believe that, at least in the Ford manual, the adjustment figures are only for use while the pressure plate is in the specified jig. Along with the jig, specific thickness spacers had to be placed between the plates while making all of the adjustments. I assume that this was to compensate for any disc wear should the clutch be adjusted with a used PTO disc inside.

Assuming you made the adjustment while on the flywheel without the factory jig, I think this is what happened. I've rebuilt dozens of those pressure plates many years ago, and never had anything like that happen to me. Of course, I always had a jig at my disposal as well.
