new clutch won't disengage

I put a new clutch and throw out bearing in my 2000 diesel, put it all back together and it won't disengage. What have I done wrong? I can slowly grind it into gear, then I can't get it out. I've adjusted the linkage in and out with no luck. I'm a rookie at this so all input is appreciated. Thank You

A Ford 2 stage clutch is not a good place for a rookie to start intalling clutches. They have to be set up on a Jig or adjusted internally before rolling the tractor back together. If the finger height on the pressure plate is not correct,it won't release, and the PTO clutch won't release either, that simple.

So the clutch assembly doesn't come pre adjusted? I was under the impression it was already adjusted. I guess now I have to break the tractor again and adj? Not what I was hoping for. Thanks for your input.

It Should have been, but I have gotten them that the adjusting nuts were loose and the screws weren't even. Did you get new or reman? If the flywheel has ever been machined, that changes things too.If you don't have a shop manual, you need to get one and read carefully before proceeding. When I install a clutch in any tractor and I do a lot of them, I roll the tractor back together,Install 2 bell housing bolts and check to see if the PTO and main clutches release before I go any farther. If they don't back apart she comes to see whats wrong. Good Luck.

You left out the important detail- is it a 1962-1964 4 cylinder 2000 or a 1965-1975 3 cylinder 2000? The clutches are completely different.

With the tractor split it is a good practice to "predict" how they will match up by measuring from the mating face of the bell housing and back of motor, to the respective finger and TO bearing surfaces. This will tell you how it is going to match up before rolling it together.

(quoted from post at 23:42:06 07/28/13) You left out the important detail- is it a 1962-1964 4 cylinder 2000 or a 1965-1975 3 cylinder 2000? The clutches are completely different.

Another important detail not stated is whether it is a single stage or two stage clutch. Weldingman assumed that it was a two stage, but the original post did not specify that, but his reply to Weldingman makes it seem like the assumption was correct, but you never know.

Searching through his history of posts, i found this:

"I've got a 3 cyl ford 2000 with a 8 speed"

and in another I found this:

"but how hard is it to split the double clutch? "

So I assume that he's talking about a 3 cylinder with a double clutch.

The reason I assumed 3 cyl. was because he said diesel. Personally I have never seen a 2000 4 cyl diesel. Yes, I know they made a 144 diesel, but they are few and far between, and I've never seen an 8 speed in a 2000 that didn't have a 2 stage clutch, but of course my assumptions could have been wrong.Just going with the most common.
