Cast Iron oil pan gasket

I got this cast iron oil pan when I aquired the 3400 front axle. In looking for a gasket I have found the following:
Cast pan gasket - 87802061
3400 pan gasket - 87840325 (".028/.035")

On the CI pan does not have the rear middle holes - however, the previous gasket must have had them because you can see the faint impression still there. Wondering which is the correct gasket for this pan?

I'm not sure what the difference is between those two numbers.
I do know that the heavier cork gasket like you get in some overhaul kits wont allow the two bolts from the back of the pan to the tranny to fit up correctly.
With the thinner paper type gasket you will be ok there.
.028/.035 sounds about the right thickness for the paper one.

Didn't understand you there Hobo.

Got my Y's and whuts mixed up :D

Why is the pan cast,,, is it for structural support.

If so I would want the correct gasket are do away with it and use RTV,,, if not then I don't see were it would make a difference...

Yes for structural support.
2 3/4" studs bolt it to the bolster and 2 3/4 bolts to the underside of the tranny.
You can kind of see the two front studs that bolt it to the 3400 bolster in the photo.
Made the engine/tractor much stouter for loader work.
I might have read here once that the original 34/44/4500 pan gasket was steel. Maybe someone else knows.
I put a CI pan on my 3000 just for a little extra protection. Have seen enough steel pans bashed in from rocks, etc. Even the oil pump bashed in.
Works on the light 2/3000 bolster but not on the heavier one.

I agree right up till you get the RTV out. That's not much better than greasing the joint in the long run. I'd MUCH prefer Loctite 518 or 515 which will actually form a bond between the block and pan. The thin OEM gasket and a light coat of HiTack aerosol would be my first choice.

I don't mean AT ALL to be insulting, but my opinion of RTV is not high at all. In most situations there is a better product that can and should be used.

Yes you have a point on the anaerobic sealer is some good stuff to use in a case like this,,, I am sure RTV would work well their about a 1/16" bead is all that would be needed cuzz 99.999% of it is going to be pushed out on asy....

I know you understand my point it had better be the correct gasket are a gasket eliminator that's made for the situation...
