PTO engaged, will not disengage

Found the shift fork for the PTO needed to be replaced. So I did that and still am confused. 1. Shouldn't I be able to turn the shaft by hand when the lever is in the disengaged position??? 2. I noticed that with the new fork installed the amount of travel for the shift collar is only about 1/4 inch. Is that normal???? I didn't want to refill all the oil just to take it out again... To messy!!!!! Thanks for all help.

Jim,all you are doing is coupling 2 shafts together and disconnecting them. There has to be a reason the collar is not moving back far enough to release them. Is the groove in the collar worn bad? you said you had to replace the shift lever. Why? Is there any end ply in the PTO shaft?

I would bet that the z shaft going inside the fork is bent a little. If it hasn"t been replced over the years, you will need to replace the shaft and an updated cover.

I just had my son take a look inside the casing and he thinks the shift collar will not mesh with the gear foreword the tractor because the splines are all messed up. I looked in my service book and cannot identify that gear. If I pulled the PTO shaft out the back will that allow me to remove the gear that the shift collar mates with? Maybe take it out the side hole...
