You should have worked on the steering while you had the radiator out.

Properly repaired and adjusted, that steering system will steer as easy as any John Deere out there.

hi bern, I did clean the lines, cyl, res, and the pump, I couldn't see anything that would cause it not to work, and im not sure bout the adjustment tho, don't know how it should be

There are adjustment screws on both sides of the actuator arm. These adjustments determine how far the spool is moved in the control valve.

Over time, wear in the various parts causes reduced spool travel. While opening up the adjusting screws will compensate, it's only a band-aid. The best thing to do is to overhaul the entire assembly. The repair manual talks about desired spool travel when making the adjustments.

I"ve had a 1967 for about 6 years or so. I"m doing some repair to it and I"m considering painting it as well. What paint color did you use?

I have been struggling with the steering on my 5000 for a few years now. Had the front apart, but never could get the cylinder and mechanism fully apart to go through it, and finally had to put it back together as I needed to use it. I know I had a lot of play in the steering wheel, and finally last week it started binding up, and finally let go (wheel started free wheeling). I am in the process of taking the steering gear apart to see what my issue is. Already ruined a steering wheel trying to get it off (resorted to torch). Next issue I see is getting the pitman arm off steering box......that promises to be interesting. Someone has really abused the steering on this tractor......probably too many hours with a Ford 7210 loader on it.
