3000 PS cylinders

The correct steering cylinders for a 3400 have a 5/8" rod and a
3000 have a 1/2" rod. The trouble you encounter on a
changeover is the ball joints from a 1/2 rod will not fit onto a
5/8" rod and vice versa. AND the tapered hole in the tie rod
where the ball joint connects is smaller on the 5/8 rod than on
the 1/2" rod. Don't ask me why. The easiest way would be to buy
the correct steering cyls if the seller doesn't want too much.
An alternative is to [b:8c15ee78e1]take the 3400 tie rods to a machine shop and
have those holes reamed with a tapered reamer[/b:8c15ee78e1] then use your
original 3000 ball joints and cylinders.

UD, do you know if the hole in the radius rods will need to be reamed as well? It looks like I will be using the 3000 cylinders when I upgrade to the 3400 axle.

Same as the 3000 cylinder or same as the 3400 tie-rod?

Also I notice that it calls for studs in the oil pan connecting the bolster. I don't have those studs, they were cut off. I have removed them and also savaged the thin spacers (not sure they will be relevant since I am bolting to new engine?) and was thinking of just using a bolt. Other than making it easier to install the spacers were the studs for another purpose?

Thanks

The tapered hole for the ball joint on the back end of the steering cylinder where it fits into the radius rod on the 3000 is the same as the tapered hole on the on the 3400 radius rod.
I am not familiar with any shims where the cast iron pan bolts to the bolster.
I was able to reuse the studs on mine but can see no reason why bolts wouldn't work just fine.
There were also two large bolts - 3/4"? that bolted the rear end of the CI pan to the tranny.
Some of the older 2/3000s did not have those holes drilled in the tranny though most of the later ones did. If yours are drilled I would use them. If not, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Thanks for your continuing support. The axle is at the machine shop now and I'll update as the project progresses.
