Hard steering Jubilee revisited

I posted about this subject yesterday and want to thank Ultradog,Texas, and soundguy for responding. Opened the steering box and found lots of water, a little oil, and a surprising amount of Montana mud!!! Packed mud and rust between the double sector teeth was the cause for the difficult steering. Also, the lower bearing was rusted out and shot. Now I have a question. To remove the lower bearing cup from the steering box, do you use a punch and drive out the plug seen (from underneath)in the bottom of the steering box? This may be a duplicate post, for I tried to post about this earlier and I guess it got lost.

Dr Bert,
From reading on here, I understand that you take a long stick on a welder and put a bead on the inside of the cup. The cup will shrink as it cools so that it will come out of the case. This same technique is used to get the cup out of the hydraulic pump.
Listening to soundguy's posts, he said it's easy!!

if the box has a core plug int he bottom.. yep.. you can nock it out.

at least a few boxes seem to NOT have the plug.

if no plug.. or if you are handy with a welder.. some 6013 and low amps and you can weld the face of the race and shrink it like the other poster said.

IO've done that plenty on top bearing races in those boxes

Thank you. I do some welding so will try this. I don't have any 6013-only 7014, but I'm sure that will work.

i just use 6013 for low pen.

if no 6013.. then some fast freeze or stuff good for OOP would work. just use low amps.. dont want to weld the race to the housing.. :) just a lil bead around the face.. and lower in a bit where some thickness is. when she cools.. she will draw. some 'fall' rige out when inverted and tapped on a table after a few minutes.
