861 starter switch

Don in Mn.

Trying to replace the starter switch. I asume the shift lever must come off first. I removed the cap nut on top of the lever, but can't get the lever off. Is it just froze on? I have it sprayed with PB blaster. Once the lever is off, does the plate with the switch just lift off? Have a Ford service manual, but not that detailed. Thanks for any help.

it's a bit of a bugger.

the shift lever has a key and does pop off. try light tapping ont he sides. also a deep 2 arm pittman puller with a wide pulling lip may help.

then you can get the trans cover off.

If it's not stuck too bad, pushing the shifter down and pulling it
when it pops up [i:e0dca6a99c]may[/i:e0dca6a99c] get it to pop off.
Otherwise, penetrating oil like you're doing and a puller like
SoundGuy mentioned. Maybe a bearing puller would fit under?
You'll want a new gasket too. They're not under pressure but
the splash lube will seep out and make a mess. BTDT.
Good on ya for putting the safety switch back in!
