tractor won't start

Been cuttung and raking hay with my 74 ford 2000 3 cylinder. Today tractor quit running changed points ,checked and its getting gas, good spark but starter bendix is kicking out. So if I hold key switch on start and bendix doesn't kick out the tractor will stay running as long as you hold key on start you can even pull the throttle and motor will rev up and run. I don't know what to check next and have about 450 bales of hay raked and ready to bale. Any help would be great
Thanks joe

Temporarily run a hot wire to the coil and see if it will stay running.
Don't run it that way, just a test.
I'm not 100% sure on your model, but many had an ignition wire
off the starter solenoid that bypassed the resistor during startup.
When you let off the starter that bypass wire deenergizes and
the coil should get power from the normal circuit.

Before I would assume its bad wiring are the build in resistor wiring I would check the voltage at the ignition switch that powers up the ignition in the run position... I am thinking bad switch are no power to the switch...

If I were unsure and did not have time to figure it out as you do I would jump the coil directly off the battery add a ICR13 ignition resistor in the circuit off the jumper to the coil and run it till you get the hay up...

Are get a NAPA IC14SB coil and straight wire it for now no resistor needed..

In a nut shell you have 99% confirmed your issue is in the run/on circuit of the ignition switch are associated wiring...

Another reason why I like voltmeters it will tell the story no guessing needed...

does my 74 20003 cylinder have a balast reistor? going to replace the key switch and hope thats it.

As I said before, not 100% sure, but I believe your tractor has a resistor
wire to the coil (i.e. ballast resistor) that is bypassed when starting.
One of the guy more familiar with the 1965+ models could say for sure.

,,Joe 201 you can run a 12 ga wire to battery to coil,,to get you by for now,,it will work ok,,you basic by passing the key ignition as you have said the key will start it,,the 12 ga wire will keep it running ,,Be sure to add a way to stop the motor,,shut off switch in line will work fine,,i did this to my 1968 ford 2000 gas tractor,,,

Joe 201 i ran the the icr13 ignition resistor in line with wire,,you dont have to use that heavy of wire as i did for testing,,
