Ford 3000 starter drive gear

After research I found the ratio of starter drive to starter ring should be 15-1 to 18-1. I have a 162 tooth ring with a 10 tooth bendix. That"s 16.2-1. Not even. What is even is a 9 tooth which gives a 18-1. I cannot find out if the ratio has to be perfectly even or not. I got a new starter 1 1/2 years ago with less than 100 starts and both are now ruined from the teeth crashing in to one another

I've never heard of comparing gear ratios, but there were different ring gears and corresponding starter drives for gas and diesel engines. I can't remember off hand, but I think the 162 tooth was for gassers. I have a good used gasser ring gear if you need one... a lot cheaper than new from NH. Do you have a gas or diesel?
Just to complicate things, late gassers used the same ring gear and drive gear as diesels. I think that change was in '72, but I'm not sure about that.

I wouldn't get all bent up about the ratio. Just make sure you're using the appropriate ring for the engine and starter you have. Sounds like you have a diesel engine given you have a 10 tooth starter drive... but just make sure you have the diesel ring and 5" lucas if you've got a diesel engine. In reality you could use the diesel ring and starter on a gas engine as well...

5" starter and diesel ring gear used on gassers only applies to late 5000's so far as I know. A 5" starter won't clear the carb on a 3 cylinder engine.
