Re: 6v -12v Ford 600 conversion

The benefit to conversion is only having one voltage to deal with, and the faster charging rate of an alternator when the tractor is not run a lot.

if your points are constantly burning up.. i'd look into what changed.

have you filed them?

is it still using a 6v battery and the oe style 6v coil?

if they are gapped correctly, and clean, and not filed, and are pitting.. check the condensor.

on your lift that drifts down.. does the handle slip down letting the lift drop? if so adjust tension on the cork friction disk.

Also remember that you could use a 12 volt generator to keep the look the same. You will need to change ignition coil and also any lights (bulbs).

If you connected the 12 v boost just to the starter the points would never have had 12 volts on them.

My 640 has the same set of points I put in it 27 years ago.Burned points are caused by leaving the key on, tight point gap or condenser failure. My 640 has run fine on 6 volts since 1954.Went to a small tractor show July 4 and was glad to see there were no conversions. You say you burned the points using a 12 volt boost and want to remedy the problem by converting to 12 volts. Not logical.
