RickB...In an earlier post you made mention of gas vs. diesel ring gears. I've got a 73 3400 that started it's life with a gas engine, the PO changed it to a diesel and from my past experience with this guys wrenching skills you got me to wondering about the ring gear. What is the difference between the two, how do I tell them apart? What happens when a gas ring gear is used in a diesel? Thanks Dan

I'm not Rick but...
The diesel uses a coarser tooth ring gear.
I don't remember the exact numbers but it's something like 140 tooth vs 170 for a gasser.
It's easy enough to change them - heat it up and drive it off. Then heat the new one up and tap it on.
The starter on a diesel is much heavier and longer than a gas starter.
