Disassembling the 881 for paint and there always seems to be one thing that breaks during disassembly that could be catastrophic. When trying to back out the cable out of the conduit to separate the lower and upper cable it broke at the fitting on the SOS Tranny cover. Someone please tell me that this part can be replaced and it is not difficult to reattach inside the tranny.

Keeping my fingers crossed. RICK/GA

According to my Service Manual I should be able to separate the upper and lower cable from the shift lever to the transmission by removing the fitting at the tranny cover sliding the cable conduit and exposing the cable connector that I have yet to see. The cable broke right at the fitting at the tranny cover. My cable conduit would not freely slide toward the shift lever.

Did you take the selector loose from the cowl first? You have to to slide the conduit and shifter up by shifting to 10th gear to reach the splice in the cable. If you only broke the fitting on the cover you may be able to find another cover. they come up on ebay all the time and just swap the fitting to you cover. If you broke the end of the conduit I have heard they are hard to find. Greg NE

Are you sure that the cable actually broke and did not just separate at the junction of upper and lower?

I am pretty sure the actual cable broke at the cover plate fitting as my service manual seems to show that the connector is a couple inches above the cover plate. My fittings and conduit are fine. I think my conduit may be bent and that is why the cable would not slide freely in the conduit. I did check online at New Holland and they seem to have one cable available for about $150. I did an online search and it may be I can get the other for about $100. Ouch and Ouch.
Thanks for your help Rick

You need to follow procedure to a T. I'm guessing with Greg NE that you did not take the shifter housing loose from the dash so that whole assembly would move up and away from the transmission????? If so, did you shift the selector to 10th and possibly force the connector down where it came apart as has also been suggested?

I did have the dash panel that the shift lever is attached to removed from the tractor as an assembly. I must admit that I expected to be able to remove the shift cable from the shift lever at first to remove the entire assembly from the tractor but there is no way for that shift lever and housing to pass through the dash panel due to the cable and the size of the shift lever housing. This is one of those designs that surprised the heck out of me.

Which is why when in tenth gear it comes apart and the end pulls through the dash.
