Any tips getting this thing out?

I removed the spindles from my newly acquired 3400 axle today. They didn't have any grease on them and had surface rust but after cleaning up I think they will be OK with new bushings. Looking at the NH parts list they were supposed to have a thrust bearing and spacer. Neither were there, but I think what was left of the thrust bearing might be? or at least that is what it looks like. I beat and beat to no avail with screwdriver, chisels and it looks like I have found the joint but it will not budge. There was what seemed to be a remnant of a bearing and I got the top part off (2nd pic) and got it off so now they are both in the same state. I'm afraid I will am going to bust the axle before it breaks loose.

Any tips on getting these things out.

A thrust bearing should be on the bottom. Must have been a bear to steer without one.

For the spindle bearings. They can be a real challenge to remove. I use a air operated die grinder with a carbide burr to grind the old sleeve bearing down to paper thin. Then use a screw driver to collapse it and remove with needle nose pliers. Just tap in a new one. Takes about 10 minutes for each.

I know some others have other techniques. They will chime in.

Thanks Kurt and Bern - I feel like the guy who cried wolf. I had to get serious with it. I took a 5 pound sledge and beat it from on the top and it broke the rust bond loose and got both sides out. I found both spacers in the process and the bottom of the race was under that. Obviously this tractor had been rode hard and put up wet! I can't see the bottom spindle bushing on either side and hope new bushing will tighten things up.
