Ford 4000 Overheat Proble

Hi all -

Our 1963 Ford 4000 Selectomatic (4 cyl gas engine). Keeps overheating. We have replaced the radiator, water pump and thermostat but it still overheats within about 30 minutes and that is just under idle - not work load. Any suggestions???

Hey Glenn, Check out the temp.sending unit to see if it is working correctly. Also, by removing the sending unit(after draining the cooling system)make sure that there is no blockage in the cooling system by blowing air into the hole were you removed the sending unit. You could then flush out the system after removing the block drain plug(s). Check for a collapsing lower rad. hose. Some molded hoses have springs in them to prevent collapsing.

A leaking head gasket or a cracked head will cause quick overheat problems. Hot combustion gas enters into the cooling system. Do you see bubbles in the coolant? There is a test kit to check for combustion gas in the coolant

Thanks everyone - I think the heat sensor is the first place we are going to start. We have pretty much redone the entire engine but did not think to check that. LOL
