Ford 3600 Carburetor Issues

I've been reading posts about the Holley carb and how they run lean sometimes, needing to pull out the choke to keep the tractor running. I have the reverse problem. Mine runs rich and there is never a need to pull out the choke (doing so can foul the plugs and keep it from starting). I get smoke at idle allot of the time, rich running. I had the Holley rebuilt at a carb shop a couple of years ago, may attempt it one more time myself. I am hoping Hobo and others will chime in and encourage me. So the problem may be the accelerator pump check ball sticking?

i'll leave the holley to someone else. but try this for a quick check.

pull the air cleaner off the carb and see if it stops smoking. a plugged cleaner will 'choke' an engine..

I've never rebuilt that particular Holley... but Holley's in general are very particular about the float height setting. Again, I lack familiarity with that carb... but your issue sounds like the idle jet is set too rich. If that's not sealed, tighten it in a bit until it stumbles and then back it out a bit. What I remember most about the double pumpers on the windsors we had... if the float was too high or the needle stuck open they would simply overflow the well and run it down the throat, thus the rich condition you presently have. I know this one is updraft and a bit different principle... but possibly the same problem. CHECK the float and needle.

Most problems with the Holley carburetor used on Ford tractors result from someone using the incorrect kit when overhauling the carb.

Other common problems are incorrect float adjustment (very sensitive) and badly worn float pivot pin bores in the float bowel resulting in the former.

I appreciate that also, Dean.

My kit will be in tomorrow to rebuild mine. Spent the extra days tractorless until I made sure I had the right part for my Holley. Sorting 5 different kits across 3 manufacturers in the surrounding 5 counties was a whole lotta fun, so glad to know was the right move triple checking kit #'s.

Tomorrow the fun begins!
