841 rebuild, gas to disel?

I have an approx 1958 841, gas engine. I'm getting about fed up with it and engine needs a complete rebuild.

However, I would prefer a diesel over gas. Is it a simple swap to replace current engine with a 172 diesel?

If so, are all application 172 blocks the same? Would an engine originally used on say a pump system or a crane or something else work, or will the block have to come from a tractor?

In the future, I may look at switching the entire tractor over to what I want, diesel, 5 speed, a rear axle with a selectable locker of some sort, and a 4wd conversion if I could ever find one (I've heard they used to exist, but can't find anything leading me to believe they're still available)

If these swaps are doable, I'll have more questions over the years for y'all.

Thanks,
JD

Thats a tall order, and very optimistic, suppose it could be done, the front axle drive may be interesting to obtain sort out etc, as set up would be nice though, set of remotes, power steering, but I am not sure about the differential lock and or the front axle drive or if there was such rear for a hundred series.

Fairly simple to swap a diesel in place of a gas. All the Red Tiger engines, whether gas or diesel, ag or industrial, use the same mounting bolt pattern.
Gas and diesel blocks are not the same... different number of head bolts, diesel has a balancer, etc.
I think you're out of luck as far as getting/making a locking differential. You'll have to move up to a '65-up model for that.
For 4wd conversion, search this site for 'Elenco'. Parts are available, and I think complete axles and drivelines as well.

Tony Jacobs who posts here can certainly set you up with a diesel powered Elenco 4WD equipped tractor. No locking system for the rear axle is available.

My pal Kenny did a gas to diesel conversion.
Bought a complete diesel from a power unit to put in a 63 2000 industrial
It wasn't as straightforward as one might think.
Throttle linkage, air filter, tank mount brackets, fuel tank, battery tray, 12V vs 6V electrical system, to name a few - all had to be changed or modified.
If you are serious about doing the switch Larry D in Lousianna had most of the parts we needed to make the change. Good man to deal with.

Nice guy. Has a lot of Ford tractor parts though he does kind of specialize in 3 cylinder models.
