Workmaster 641 electrical system

I have recently acquired a 1959 Workmaster 641. The battery that was installed (and still is) is clearly a 6V battery. However the system is a negative ground.

I thought the 6V systems are positive ground and the 12V systems are negative ground?

Where there negative ground systems? And how would I check to see if this tractor is supposed to be 12V? Numbers on the generator or voltage regulator?

Help is appreciated!

Bill

ground polarity is determened by look at which post of the battery is tied to the chassis.

gasser fords pre 65 left the factory as positive ground ( and 6v ).

diesel fords left the factory as 12v and negative ground.

you can setup a ford genny and run it as positive OR negative ground.

If you have an alternator on it.. it becomes less clear. the bulk of alts are 12v neg ground. but you can get 6v alts.. and positve or neutral(isolated) ground units.

thanks Soundguy... I did a double check and it is 6v with negative ground. It runs, starts (except for the solenoid problem I have) and appears to charge properly.

Any ideas why this would be this way?

who knows.

someone mighta thought it should been hooke dup like his new car in the driveway and did it.

it will run fine like that.

I love the 6 volt system on my 641. I had it covered with a tarp and did not start it since last October. Got on her on May 25th and she started on her own power without a jump. 12 volt would never have done that.

1/2 the cars and trucks built in 1940 were positive ground.Your question is confusing but the 641 came from the factory 6 volts positive ground.
