Work Master 601 starting problem

I have a starting problem with my "59 Work Master 640.

Battery is charged. Press start button and solenoid clicks. Sometimes it will "catch" and turn over engine...but when I release the starter button it continues to crank on its own (even when ignition switch is off). I tried removing the wire to the button and it continued to crank. (Button good?)...

So I tapped on the solenoid and it started again. I"m zeroing in on solenoid because of the primitive button test and the fact that the starter is working.

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience they can share to help me out?

Thanks in advance.

sounds like hte solenoid contacts arced and melted a bit and stuck.

many times this is from low voltage.

charge the batteries and clean up all connections. if you can bypass solenoid and make it crank over esilly.. then replace solenoid.

Replaced solenoid and it starts now. But battery is weak and not holding a charge. Next up, new battery.

Has anyone used a 6v golf cart battery in these applications?
