Ford 860 PTO Problem

I have a 56 860 and the PTO shaft will spin and react with RPM changes. It doesn't grind going in or out. However when you put any resistance the PTO shaft will stop. You can stop it with your hand if you choose. It does have a rattle similar to the throw out bearing on a car and when pressing the clutch pedal to engage the PTO the noise stops. I am new to the tractor world and trying to diagnose my problem before spending to much. Thanks for any help provided.

From the available information, it would appear that the PTO clutch has failed.

Thats what I have been leaning towards. I was unsure if there is a way to adjust it in the tractor or just suck it up and buy a whole new setup. I just bought the tractor and everything else works

The only adjustment is on the outside of the trans. You can adjust Freeplay and Pedal Height. Since the PTO engages first and disengages last I doubt those adjustments are your problem. A rebuilt double clutch assembly costs about $400.

From all I have gathered thats what I thought but people who have done tend to know better. Thanks for Yall"s
insight

most likely what the others said about the clutch.. however.. i think i'd pull the shaft for a looksee.. even though it will drain the rear 2 sumps oils.

i've seen a shaft on a N shear past the pump and freewheel from contact betweent he halves.. but there was enough thrust bearing play that 'hand' pressure would stop it and make it gall and grind at the shaft break.

hyds worked.. :) since damage was post pump. :)

probably not it. worth looking if it beeds an oil change...

Thanks I have pulled the shaft checked it the shift lever and collar all seem good. So it looks like I am clutch bound. If I buy a new clutch do I still need a adjustment fixture for it or should it come in proper and just use a line up tool for the pilot bearing.
Thanks Jason

The clutches sold by this site come with a new throw out and pilot bearing. They are pre adjusted and mine didn't need an alignment tool. Consider changing the two transmission input shaft seals while you have it split.
