What is the best way to break a ford 9N tractor in half to change the starter ring gear and also to remove the ring gear itself ?

The way I do it is pull the front axle assembly off then pull the engine. But I do have a I-Beam with 2 trollies so doing that is easy

here's what I do.

get on hard surface. driveway, shop floor, etc.

cut you some wood wedges with a skill saw and 2x4 and wedge the front axle stops onthe engine side so the engine don't lay over on ya when split.

have cribbing and jack stands ready.

do NOT rely on concrete hollow cell cinder blocks and jacks for support.

SOLID pillow concrete is marginally acceptable.. but not for metal contact as they can crack and split. put wood on any solid concrete.. though i prefer to NOT use them at all.

if you have 2 rolling floor jacks it makes it much easier.. though a rolling floor jack and a bottle jack is ok.

block and cribb under oil pan..

crib under tranny with a wood plank and then put floor jack under it so you can roll the back away. only need a few inches.

chock front wheels. and have stops ready for back wheels in case there is a slant.

i find it easier to roll the back away and then forward since it has big wheels to grab.

you can use bottle jack to adjust height of front section if needed. once you roll back away.. jackstand/cribb it.

i'd suggest changing trans input shaft seal and checking clutch if you are this far in. pilot bearing and throw out bearing.. etc.

use a cheap plastic alignment tool or the input shaft if you have it off to alighn clutch.

you c an cut the heads off some longer large gr2 bolts and use them as guide dowels when going back togehter to help allign stuff up.

make sure she slides free. you can use bolts to take down and snug her.. but don't try pulling al the way with bolts and a air wrench in case you have not got her aligned .. etc.

if you are doing work like the front kingpin. OLD's method will be better using a cherry picker or trans jack etc...

be safe.

to remove the ring gear drill between a couple teeth or cut 90% with a hacksaw / grinder then hit it with a big cold chissle a few whaps. splits them right off.

got a gas bbq grill cook yer ring gear and then use a rosebud if ya got one to heat it. drop it on the flywheel.. some people freeze the flywhell... etc. tap with a hammer all the way around to make sure it falls in place.. then let it cool a bit.

most ring gear have a bevel side. that bevel goes back toward trans so the starter drive can suck into it an mesh

some times people find a few surprises inside. like a loose ring gear that has been welded to the flywheel. many times people put 3-4 smal beads right at the ring gear to flywheel connection . if they were kind... it wil be a small surface weld and you can just grind it out carefully from the surface. then onc ethe ring gear is off.. take a file tot he area and dress it. etc.

Concrete floor and 2 floor jacks, a hand full of 5/8 and 11/16 tools about an hour and a half of time, remove flywheel.Split the old ring with a torch or grinder, Heat the new one up to about 400 degrees and drop it on. Wait till it cools and reinstall. 3 hours later you should be done. Just kidding you probaly won't get along that good on the first one but I have done a few dozen over the years.
