Blue lemons? Which higher-hp Fords to avoid?

Hi,

my friends who have a small organic farm are looking for a 60-90
hp tractor to pull a chisel plow and or a spader. I don't know
about X000 series tractors, but theres 7000 and 8000 for sale in
my area. Are there obvious lemon years/models out there we
should avoid?

thanks

A 7000 Ford has got to be one of the toughest tractors ever made. I know of one that I have serviced and made a few minor repairs on that has 12,000 hours on it is is still going strong. Has only had one clutch put in it and it runs summer and winter.8000 is non turbo, not near as popular a tractor as a 7000 in my area.

6000 is the red headed stepchild sos only machine.. limited parts support.

8000? the usual stuff. some tranny parts are priced outta thuis world.

I'd for sure think a 5000 or 7000 would be a gread machien to climb into. stepping a lil newer.. 5600, 6600 7600.. etc. on into the 10 and 10/II series.

7000 is the more popular and arguably better of those two. 8000 is a 105 h.p. 401 c.i.d. 6-cyl. (great engine), but they can have some trouble with the transmission, steering, and rear hubs. And they're a bit older ('68-'72). 7000 is rated at 83 h.p. from a 256 turbo 4-cyl., '72-'75. Often make 90 h.p. or even a bit more. I have one my Grandpa bought new in '75. Replaced the clutch once and rebuilt the engine due to cylinder wall cavitation. Now has over 13,000 hours on it. Hard to go wrong with a 7000, unless it's seen a lot of abuse and neglect...

We have had a 1975 Ford 7000 since new. Tough tractor. One complaint is poor location of PTO and hydraulic levers. Too short and located too far under the seat. If you need to use these levers all day long it gets tiresome in a hurry. The newer 7700 series improved this a lot.

We have had a 6600 since the 70's. it quit logging hours around 11,000 hours nearly 20 years ago. It is still my favorite over newer New Holland and John Deere models we have.
