850 gas hard starting when warm

Hi guys, I have a gas 850, 12 volt, that has been very reliable. The last couple of days, the tractors starts first try with a touch of choke, and runs strong. But after running it a bit and shutting it off, it doesn"t want to re-start. I get it running after cranking it 10 or more times. this has never happened before. What should I check first?

First thing is immediately when it won't start check first for a strong spark that jumps 1/4 inch. If it has spark check for gas flow. good flow for a few seconds means nothing. It must stay strong for thirty seconds. How long do you run it before having this problem?

It sounds like weak spark but it could be flooding after shut down.

Next time shut off the fuel valve and let it run the carburetor dry. Attempt to restart in similar situation immediately after turning the fuel valve back on.

I was winching logs with a pto winch so i would start the
tractor, winch in a log or two, then shut down. There wasn't
much running time for each pull.

So it could be obstructed fuel and getting enough time between the short runs for the filter bowl and float bowl to refill, with just a tiny dribble of gas.

I have found that my 640 will act that way if you stall it while baling hay.Hot starts shouldnt need choking but I have to give the choke a pull to get started again.I have no answer for this but one fellow said he thought the hot manifold caused the problem.Normally once the engine is warm it doesnt need choking.

Turns out it was a weak spark. Put in new points and plugs, and made sure everything was bright and tight, and purrs like a kitten again.
