801 Ford Power Steering

Time to get serious, I am recovering from rotator cuff surgery and I tried to use the tractor to mow with Saturday. It was not a pretty picture. The tractor has an industrial loader so if I raise the front tires with the loader, the PS works. When the wheels are on the ground, it is virtually non-existant. Resevoir is full with PS fluid, you can hear the pump laboring, the belt is new and tight. Anyone have trouble shooting suggestions and possible resolutions?

I had the pump apart last fall and replaced the seals. Pretty simple roller pump, I doubt that it is the problem. Seals for the rams available? Would they be OEM only or are they common parts?

The steering cylinders are welded together and must be cut apart to replace the piston seals. This is a job for a good hydraulic shop.

Aftermarket cylinders are available but are expensive.

Most likely the problem IS the pump as these pumps are 50+ years old.

New replacement pumps are once again available.

I'd be tempted to put a guage on the pump and verify what kind of pressure it is putting out.
Should be around 6-700 lbs pressure.
Otherwise you are just kinda shooting in the dark.
If the pump checks out then it's time to pull the tin off and go through the hydraulic block in the steering column.
They get crud and rust in them or the little springs can break and do not operate properly.
They are easy to go through and parts are available from CNH.
If you do go through the block post back and we can give you a few pointers to help.
The only parts on the original steering cylinders that are replaceable is the seal where the rod comes out. But even if they were leaking badly that is not likely your problem.

Do you deadhead the pump with a pressure gauge to check or parallel the HP line with a tap? Thanks for the replies.
