Will not go into 2nd or 4th gear. Its like its not even in there when u move the shifter. Any ideas what the problem is? Have not taken the cover off yet to check it out as we just got it home last night.

Before you pull the top, remove the slotted plug about half way down , outside, the right side of the transmission case. There should be a spring and a little steel ball behind the plug. See if that makes a difference? If not, back to removing the top.

How long had it sat with out running?? I have seen more then one tractor that would not shift due to having sat a long time and parts rusting up and would not move. Some freed up with using then and others did not. Check to fluids also and make sure it is not full of water

well I know there is water in the fluid which we will be changing. When they put the Sherman backhoe on they left out some bolts in the top cover under the seat. So we will plug those and change the fluid. It was been running, the guy we bought it from said there was no 4th cause it made it dangerous to drive that fast with the Sherman combo. Which I know Is a bunch of crap.

Well as for the Sherman combo yes it can make one get up and move and if the steering is sloppy yes it can be unsafe. I have an 841 and going down a hill in 4th over drive it can get up and over 25MPH and that can be unsafe.
As for why it does not safe could well be rust but not having 4th the only way you can figure out what may have been done is open it up
