2000 PTO disengages under load

Got a 2000 3cyl gas. Runs great but the PTO lever will disengage under a heavy load. I can run a bush hog all day just fine but the tiller will bog down and pop the lever. Frustrating. I've taken to keeping my left heel against it just to get the job done. It's gotten worse over time. What's the fix?

any thrust play in the pto shaft? if yes. pull her to fix. may be damaged bearing or split ring or bearing carrier.. or slipped wear ring.

1/16 is right on my personal tolerance edge of pulling and servicing a pto shaft.

if it was me.. I'd service it.

while at it.. check detent.. also.. check all your shafts to make sure they are the proper lenght.. are lubed and expand and contract without binding

In and out play could be that the shaft is moving in the bearing or the bearing is moving in the housing. I've had both at times. It happens when the implement's power shaft is a little too long and when lowered the shaft collapses until it bottoms out. Then it punches the shaft causing the oil seal ring to slip or the bearing breaks the snap ring that keeps it in the housing. If you're lucky, the ring braaks before the housing groove.
