Does anyone know if the PTO on a 3400 can be "live". Does the clutch have to be engaged for the PTO to run, or is there a way to have the PTO run regardless if the clutch is engaged or not.

It could be live. Might not be either.
A lot of the 3400s used that 6X4 tranny - 6 forward, 4 reverse - which was not live pto.
The only way to have your pto unaffected by the clutch would be to have 'independent pto'.
Those trannys were not found on the 3000 size Fords except for the Select O Speed models.

I was afraid that what you said would be the answer. I couldn't find anything in the operators manual about it. Thanks.

I have a 3000 with Live PTO. The clutch is two
stage. When you first begin letting the pedal up,
the PTO will turn (if you have PTO lever engaged).
At about half way the tractor will start to roll (if
tranny is in gear).

'll have to check mine now. Maybe it was like that all along and I didn't know to check it that way. Thanks.
