mowed some ROW and easement today with the old 'parts machine' 950

added fuel, opened valve hit on 2nd rev. had 20psi oil pressure on that rev and 40 immediatly. 40 hot idle too.

didn't even clean and regap the points this year.

lubes and greased her and the mower up and went to it.

checked all fluids.. everything good.. no leaks.

hmm.. maybee i should add an electronic ignition to make for easier starts and more reliability?

I think you need to convert it to 12V first, get rid of that genny.
Then lose those "bad" spin out rear rims.
You could send those my way if you don't want them. ;)
Nice looking machine. Glad you got some seat time!

i spent way too much time fixing them PA rims to get rid of them.

previous moron owner welded the discs tot he centers ALL the way around. added triangular gussets that he welded on.. and then took a piece of metal bentingto a spiral and tacked that on too.. just for good measure!

and the rims were not rusted up or eat up either. all in 99% condition. some of the best spin outs i've seen. less wear on them than the spinn outs on my 4000 even. I swapped some spare rubber to them and then took an entire winter and spring to break them monsters down and torch and air chissle and die grinder them discs off the rims. then clean up all the weld marks, and get the center clean so it would PA adjsut again.

can't for the life of me understand why the PO did that. here's the kicker. they were adjusted differently too! not even set the same. not even close!

as for 12v... she already is. ;) that's s stealth conversion using a gen from a diesel 01.

Like I said. this on'es almost a parts machine. I got parts from like 7 other tractors on her. Bought some from members here and some i had leftover from other rowcrops..e tc.

when i got her.. she had no charge system at all.. just a pulled tied in place. useless tin and a vw tank tied in with a garden hose! wrong carb.. no battery box.. bad air celaner.. etc.. etc.. some damaged parts in the rear end. steering was bad.. lots of stuff inthe front pedistal is worn beyond hope. I went in there and did some advanced part-if-ication and farm engineering and now she's driveable .. but I really need a new front pedistal on her... but darn it.. she starts good :)

radiator is from a small import car... was fun adapting that one over.... ;)

i use her as my rough area mower. i put a bumper on the front and will take her straight into the bushes on the edges of property or around trees. I'm not afraid of hurting any nice paint or anything... and with her steering.. i don't get too close to the fence line except in 1st or 2nd gear ;)

Soundguy,

I have a favor to ask. Could you please send some pic's of the back side of your 950's front bumper? I would like to see how it is welded to the square tubing and mount bolted to the pedestal.

I have the same style front bumper, and some square tubing, and I would like to mount it onto my 961.

Thanks!

Not a bad looking (parts) tractor I will have to agree! Just finishing up a 59 971 that I got last fall to be my "new" finish mower tractor and hope it runs as good as yours. I"m glad u decided to go thru the work of saving those rims, always have liked the looks of them. Greg NE

and they were a piece o' work.

thank goodness for air chissles and die grinders and angle grinders....

post pics of your machine!

Finished mowing seven acres here Monday for the second time. 8N and six foot finish mower. Be happy to trade you even up, Soundguy.

i took a repop front bumper and torched it's arms off that normally go to a front axle

i them took some thin cardboard and a balpeen and made a template of the 4 bolt front hole pattern on the front bolster.

i transfered that template to some ? 1/4" plate I had and cut the holes, checked for fit.

even made a hole for the front check plug on the front of the bolster.

used 2" square tube for the connector piece and then welded them up and painted and bolted on.

i have some pics of when i built it.... hope they help.

please excuse the welds. I'm an average welder.. i have an ac stick machine.. and I do lots of grinding.

same with my torch work. ;)

i torched the bolt holes then went with with a rotary bur and rounded them. was faster than drilling them large holes.. for me anyway.

took a bit with an angle grinder to clean up where i torched the arms off too.

went and sqaured up the edges of the cut plate with the grinder too.. she's a good bumper though. think i paid 55$ at the auction for her..

you like my work bench? :) it's a pile of old tires with a heavy rim center ont hem.. and a small vice bolted to that center.. :)

insilated I guess.. :)

wife made me get rid of that 'bench' a few days ago as a matter of fact. so now i have that center and vice laying on the ground in the shop.. :)

that's my 'outside' vice. good one is on the bench inside.. :)

i love my rowcrops. once i started playing witht he 53 and 55+ machines..it was no looking back to the 39-52 machines :)

still.

I couldn't, in good conscience, sell this machine to anyone. it's literally made of parts. :) i wouldn't want to sell a mutt like that to someone. plus front bolster needs replacing.

it steers with some play.. but cannot be fixed any better with it's current front bolster. took plenty of fabri-welding-farmerification to get it that far. front bolster and internls were hogged out and gone from setting in a bog running a water pump for years. ok for farm work.. but i would not road her... she'd wander too much. None of my other machines are like that. I actually like going thru steering boxes and front ends.. this one just wasn't much hope for. :)

Soundguy,

Yes the pictures do help. My bumper is identical to yours except for the bent flat steel on the bottom of the channel. I found my bumper on craigslist about a 1 1/2 years ago. Gave a guy down in SE Ks $35. Like you I took the brackets off, 1/2" thick, as they weren't going to work on the pedestal. I used a die grinder to do my cutting. Gotta be creative and patient grinding inside that channel.

S.I.L. is a welder. I will "deploy" him to obtain a piece of plate steel as he informed me he can get metal at a discount where he works.

Yes! Love the work bench. My old Chinese 4" jawed vise gave up many years ago. I need a new one.

The cardboard template is an excellent idea that I will have to copy.

Thanks Soundguy!

would love to see pics when you are done / working on it.

I'm not a welder.. I just own a welding machine.. and i don't claim any good torching skills either :) yours will look much better than mine if you have a pro welder working the controlls.

can't wait to see it.

ps. if you can.. try to remember to make a '5'th hole inthe flat bracket for the front pedistal oil check / drain.. makes it easier than taking the bumper off!
