valve noise?

I started my 1973 ford 3 cylinder gasser 2110 LCG tractor up today after setting all winter and heard a tapping noise sounded like it was coming from # 1 cylinder, like a loose rocker arm. After tractor warmed up the noise quited down a bit but still can barely hear it when motor is reved up (12 to 14 rpm). I bladed driveway for about an hour all was good except for noise.I'm going to adjust valves, is there anything else that I should check when valve cover is off? Any thoughts or comments?
Thanks Joe

I was taught that is was better to here a little tappet noise then to not here it. Reason is if you hear it then you know the valves are not being held open but if you do not then you can not be sure. Of course my first car did not have hyd lifters so learned they need to tap tap a bit or you ended up with burnt valves

I looked inside one to investigate a valve tap. There is an aluminum part that is twisted to set lash. However, it apparently breaks off the hex part. Couldn"t figure out what to do about that, so left it alone for now. I guess the aluminum increases in length as the engine gets hot and keeps the lash more constant.

I still have the burnt exhaust valve from my '74 Toyota sitting on my desk. Teenage over zealous valve adjustment being the culprit. Celica engine sounded quiet and ran great till it ate that valve!

I have always set valve gaps wider. Before hydraulic lifters I checked new Fords and found a few were too tight on one or two valves.Chevy 6 cyl were bad for burning valves because they were set tight.

You still need to locate the tick,,, it could be a exhaust leak.
If you have not adjusted the valves I would adjust them once adjusted are even before you can determine were the tick is if its a adjustment issue.
If adjusted proper it should not tick run it with the valve cover off... None of my tractors have valve noise because I was taught how to get them way not to live with it... The only way I would live with it is if it were not possible to run it with the valve cover off are if adjusted with in a few tho of spec on the tight side and it still ticked... if that's the case adjust to spec and live with it but until this is determined that's no reason to live with it from hear say....

In 1964 I bought a new Rambler American, the last year for the old 3 main bearing 6 cyl design. I forget the time span, not much, but to maintain the warranty I had to bring it back to the dealer to have the head torqued and valves reset. Never had before nor sense.

I don't know if their upgraded 6 which had 7 mains had that reaquirement.

I had a 61 rambler that had to have the head milled to keep a head gasket in it.I bought a 64 Rambler V8 that was a nice car. Both were well used when I bought them.
