Tractor Model

I recently bought a Ford tractor. The guy I bought it from said it is an older 4000 before Ford squared the hood but I am trying to verify that. Behind the starter it has 81-D stamped in and below that is a string of other numbers but they are tough to make out. Does the 81-D mean anything?

At this point I don't have the tractor but if additional info is needed I will get that once I have possession of the tractor.

BTW, it has a Ford 730 loader on it also. At this point I'm not sure what I will do with the tractor. I may fix it up or just part it out. As I understand it the SOS tranny doesn't work but everything else does, but that has to be verified.

Thanks for any help.

Just behind the starter you should see 2 bolt holes. Above those is a flat spot and the model number and serial number is stamped there. It will look sort of like this and the example is from my 841
8 4 1 S
&^&^%^$%^
The S stands for a factory installed Sherman after market Combo

Thanks old, I will check that out and post the info, might be a couple days before I can get it though.

sounds like some sort of 801D model.. menaing 172 ci diesel, and 58-62 model years. IE.. the model that was BEFORE the 4000 4 cyl that the seller is claiming it is.

unless it's a replacement trans from a 801 in a 4000 etc.

the middle digit you are missing will corespond to tranny and clutch style.

4 = 4spd, non live

5 = 5 spd, non live

6= 5spd, live

Since you say it has a SOS then the missing digit in your model number is either an 8 or 9. If it's a standard Utility tractor it's an 881 Diesel and if it's a Row Crop it's a 981 Diesel. The 8 in the middle signifies that it has 3 PTO speeds- 540, 1000 and Ground.

weird. that lower part of his message didn't even show when i viewed it.

knowing he had said sos would have helped a bit :)

I may be wrong but I believe he is talking what is Ground speed and then the 545RPM and the 1000RPM. Worked on a 3000 that had all 3

(quoted from post at 19:15:53 04/27/13) 3 pto speeds with a select-o-speed?

Yes, the x81 models (681, 781, 881 & 981) had the Select-O-Speed transmission with 3 PTO speeds, 540 rpm, 1000 rpm and ground speed. The x71 models only had a single sped 540 rpm PTO.

Thanks Sean. thats the answer i was looking for,
guess i ask in the wrong manner. my sos was 540
only by pulling the lever. how do you select 540 or
1000 rpm? also, is ground speed a seperate
function? thanks again.

Pete - There are 2 levers on the left side of the tractor. The first one is on the side of the transmission up near the front of the foot rest. That lever has 3 positions, 540, Neutral and 1000. The second lever is on the left side of the rear axle center housing, near the rear of the left foot rest, and that second lever has 2 positions, neutral and "ground drive engaged".

The 2 levers are mutually exclusive, in that only one of them can be shifted to a non-neutral position at a time. If the first one is in either the 540 or 1000, the second one cannot be shifted out of neutral, and if the second one is in the "ground drive engaged" position the first one cannot be shifted out of neutral.

When that first lever is in either the 540 or 1000 position, the handle on the right side of the dash works just like yours, pulling it out engages the PTO and pushing it in disengages it.

When the second lever is in the "ground drive engaged" position, the handle on the dash has no effect, and the PTO is driven off of a gear on the transmission output shaft, so the PTO speed varies depending on how fast the rear wheels are turning, hence the name "ground speed".

thanks sean, not many sos in nw al. so i was not
familiar with those models that had the 540/1000 rpm
and ground speed. very good explanation.

Ok, now I have some additional information.

On the flat behind the starter is stamped,
881-D (the dash is a one laying on its side if that matters)
<>139736<> (the <> are diamonds at each end of the numbers)

According to the seller the SOS transmission doesn't work but he doesn't know what is wrong with it. It also has the Ford 730 loader which appears in really good condition, some weld repairs on it but not scabbed on. The engine is a 4 cyl diesel and runs but he says it is getting diesel fuel in the oil somehow. The tires would all have to be replaced.

Any rough idea on the value of this considering the tractor is in rough condition but the loader is in good condition?

(quoted from post at 10:35:45 05/11/13) Hi Bob,
Did you decide to part out your 881? If so, I need the pto
shaft from that model tractor. Thanks!

I haven't had much time to even think about it yet Farmer. I know I would rather sell it complete if possible. Probably over the next week or two I will get some time to check it over, then decide what to do with it.

Either way I will post it on here what I decide.
