Ok i got it out to where the bolt are all loose which is about 1 3/4 inch and i can wiggle it but it won't come any more. could the axle be caught on something inside the housing

Which are you trying to remove at this point, the brake drum or the axle shaft? The brake drum should come off separately first. If the drum is moving a little and then won't move any more, then the shoes are probably catching on a lip on the back edge of the drum. Have you adjusted the star wheel adjuster all of the way to the loose end of it's adjustment? If so, and it's still catching, you may need a bigger hammer.

I want to replace the axle housing so I need to pull the axle out. I now have the brake drum about 1 3/4 inch out of the housing and it won't go any more.

have you not botheres to read ANY of the replies in this thread???

back the brakes off and get that drum off first.

Yes i have read the previous post, I was told that by local mech that drum & axel would come together where i realy got confused. will work on the drum removal first and then the axel

I need to tell you what i have done now.
I have the nuts removed that fasten the drum to the axle housing and it is pulled away from the housing about 1& 3/4 inch

have you backed the brakes off.

have you removed the screws holding the drum on

have you removed the drum.

go back till you get that step done.

you are right but i talked to more then one mech one was ford tractor and another was from external_link and i told them it was a 631

Listen to SG... the drum MUST come off before you do anything else..you are hanging up on the shoes that are catching on the ridge that has been worn in the drum. Unless you totally back the adjusters off, you may crack the drum by beating on it.

all of you better take another look at the picture . the drum is not in the lug nuts like a 600 or 601 it is behind them & will not come off until the axle comes out. AGAIN take a look at the picture

Maybe I am looking at this wrong. But it appears you have a 4 inch wheel extension bolted to the brake drum. Get a 1 1/16 wrench and remove the eight nuts that hold the extension on the drum, than the rest of the advise given will work. Once the extension is removed you may have two slotted screws holding the drum to the axle, or may be some special clips, or maybe nothing. By the way, put the nuts back on the inside of the axle housing that previously you removed.

My bad, after rereading your post, sound like you are wanting to remove the axle from the housing. Still think it might help to get the drum off first to give a little felxability

loks like a wheel extender to me.

i'm no mechanic.. but what does it look like holds this drum on to you?

lugs eh?

drum off = alot less weight to manhandle.

spacer too.

If you have all 9 nuts removed at the bearing support (back side) AND the linkage at the brake shaft somewhere near the rear housing the brake control shaft will come with the brake backing plate intact... You will be ablel to remove it as a assyembly no need to remove the drum are anything else unless you plan to service/replace brakes and seals,,, you were told right and the way I would go after it if all I was doing was replacing the trumpet only...

going that far why not inspect the brakes though?

and take that heavy drum off to make it all eaiser to manhandle?
