Ok i got it out to where the bolt are all loose which is about 1 3/4 inch and i can wiggle it but it won't come any more. could the axle be caught on something inside the housing

I need to tell you what i have done now.
I have the nuts removed that fasten the drum to the axle housing and it is pulled away from the housing about 1& 3/4 inch

have you backed the brakes off.

have you removed the screws holding the drum on

have you removed the drum.

go back till you get that step done.

Yes i have read the previous post, I was told that by local mech that drum & axel would come together where i realy got confused. will work on the drum removal first and then the axel

you are right but i talked to more then one mech one was ford tractor and another was from n-complete and i told them it was a 631

Listen to SG... the drum MUST come off before you do anything else..you are hanging up on the shoes that are catching on the ridge that has been worn in the drum. Unless you totally back the adjusters off, you may crack the drum by beating on it.
