12volt conversation

Need help with wiring. I bought 12volt convertion kit, installed and hook wires to where instruction say, at least I think so. I used a 12volt coil so no resister. Used old solnoid that has 4wire hook up. 12volt battery. There is no ammeter just a indicator light. When starter switch is pressed the indicator light comes on and that's all. The starter does nothing. Any ideas where I went wrong? The wiring diagram wasn't the best but I think it's close.

you might throw us a bone and tell us what machine this is.

and saying 'old school solenoid' means nothing.

and yuo will need to describe the wireing that YOU did, and what was present before we can guess how bad you miswired it to make a lamp come on pressing 'some' start button.

you give.. then we give. :)

Sorry bout leaving out info, aggravation had set in. Lol
It's a 1958 ford 861, it had a 6 volt wiring harness, 6 volt everything. With the new 12 volt harness, one wire alternator that feeds from alternator wired with together with another comeing off of solnoid thats with the battery cable to the indicator light.those are red. Have yellow wire from solnoid to starter switch. Orange wire from solnoid to terminal block, with white wire going to 12volt coil, plus one to toggle switch. Toggle replaced key switch. Other side of terminal block, is wire to toggle switch, and one to indicator light. Plus cable from solnoid to starter.

pry the plug out of the #1/#2 connection point if this is a gm 10 si alt and hookup one wire from the the red indicator lamp to #1.. for kicks.. jump #2 down to charge stud. hook t he other red indiscator lamp wire to ign side of ignition switch

the PROPER 4 post solenoid will need to be wired 1 big stud to starter.. one to bat hot.

1 lil stud to switched side of ignition, and one lil stud to thumb push button safety interlocked switch.

ign on should make red lamp come on.. after start and reaching 400 rpms, MAYBEE, red lamp may go off.. or the reg might need more rpm.. maybee 1200.. etc..

The solnoid your talking is right, It's hooked up that way , and the indicator light comes on and off with the toggle. But power is not reaching starter. I don't know the brand of alt but it does have the plug and connections your say, so should I still try to try the atl that way?

You say "the indicator light comes on and off with the toggle"
In your earlier post you said "When starter switch is pressed the indicator light comes on".
Isn't it already on, or are you pressing the start button with the key/toggle switch off?
Can you post a picture of the alternator and wiring diagram?
I'd hate to say "hook this up to here" without knowing what you have.

" The wiring diagram wasn't the best but I think it's [u:6d2fcd00ee]close[/u:6d2fcd00ee].
"
Tain't horseshoes! "Close" can make the difference between runs & smoke/fire. Post a drawing of your exact current wiring & a dozen people here can tell you what is right & wrong.

Go to the archives and find a wiring diagram for the conversion. It isn't hard to do.

if i didn't want you to try it.. why did i type it in?

if starter won't run.. RE CHECK your wires!!!

if you are getting power on one small termianl and grounding the other small termaoinal and it DOES NOT engage the solenoid.. it's the wrong solenoid.. or it's BAD...

i didn't see any expert knowledge from you on the situation.

your diagnosis thus far would be? what? silence as usual?

thought so...

I just had the same issue. The conversion kit was purchased with wiring harness. Check ALL of the crimps on the wire harness, I had to replace three so far, the white to the coil, the orange, and small red at the solnoid. And I did continuity checks on all all passed, wire was crimped thru the insulation, and eventually broke.
Also, check for voltage at coil, terminal block and small studs on solnoid.
