How can i tell if i have the right distributor on my ford

I have a ford 641 tractor , gasoline 4 speed.

I noticed my distributor cap seemed loose so i bought a replacement cap.

Neither seem to fit it right, nor do they seem to have any notches to
lock them in place properly on the distributor.

Is there some number, or feature i could look for to tell if it is the right distributor ?

If its not any gueses as to what it might be from ? So i can get a cap for it :)

there seems to be shavings and grooves where the rotar sometimes rubs,
at least on the old one. It knocked the new one off several times until i got it just
right.

Any advice appreciated, thanks , dave.

I'll bet you're missing the dust cap- a black plastic piece that goes between the cap and the metal housing of the distributor. You have to take the rotor and the metal spring clip off to install the dust cap.

There is an inner cap that fits under the distributor cap. Is it there along with the spring clip for the rotor?

Here's a picture of the dust cover the others mentioned from the NH website.

Thanks . am missing some pieces.
The cover over the points and under the rotar in the picture, and maybe some
of the associated parts.

I have run it for about 100 hours without it ! Ever since i bought it.
Lately it as been dying sporatically so i have been replacing the ignition.

I did not lose it, it was never there since i got it !

I guess i will see if TSC or someplace has it local next trip to town, if not i will look online.

It is running currently, Just replaced the points, condenser, rotar, coil , plugs, and wires.

That diagram is probably all i need to fix it, but feel free to volunteer anymore info i may need.

if you've been blindly repalcing ignition parts every time it stalls, and not doing any troubleshooting.. you may have been wasting money.

I didnt find it locally , i didnt check the closest ford dealer because they are not really local. So i guess i will order it from the store here. I also need some other parts i found here, i will start a new thread to ask about them.

The tractor has run fine until recently, recently it as started dying randomly, so i decided to do a tune up. I bought a service manual , but have momentarily misplaced it , and didnt really need it _yet_ so i didnt look for it.

I bought them all at once and replaced them all at once.

I will start a new thread for the other parts.
