I have a "68 Ford 3000 3cyl Gas tractor. Recently I was Tilling and it would run about 10 minutes and then shut off. I would crank the tractor and it would start but as soon as I let off the ignition key it would shut off. The last time I cranked it, I got a small amount of smoke. I found the battery cable (which was against the Solenoid) was burnt through. I replaced the cable, charged the battery up and got nothing but a small amount of smoke from the solenoid. I have ordered a new solenoid. Are there any other areas that I should be looking at? Thanks!!

check spark.

that system uses a resistor wire from key 'run' to coil, and when starter is activated with solenoid, there is a straight non resisstive wire to the coil. if sparks are weak, it may make sparks without the resistor in line.. but once you let up.. sparks my drop off. could even be an 'open' in the resistor wire. if it will start but not stay started.

lastly.. if sparks are good, and it runs but soon stalls.. check fuel flow.

I was able to do some work on the tractor and did the following: 1. Replaced the Solenoid, 2. Replaced the plugs, 3. Double checked all wires and replaced several. When I turn the key in the crank position I get nothing (no click and it doesn"t even turn over). Plus I still got a small amount of smoke from the solenoid.

Do you think we are looking at the starter or coil? Or something else? Thanks

when you turn to crank.. does the solenoid click?

if you jump the solenoid, does the starter turn?

if yes, then bypas the NS switch and try again.

the coil is not causing the starter to smoke..
