SOS idc verses ddc band adjustment

Hope I got the abreveations right. Pre "62. SOS Adjustments are the same in to20 manual and a big boy manual. Just writtin different. Was told in a post a while back That adjustments were different for the different trannys. Anybody got the adjustments for the indirect drive clutch. Thanks for any advice, Dave

Do you want the band adjustments for the Over-Running Clutch or for the Direct Drive Clutch transmission? There is no such thing as an IDC in an SOS.

Oh yea the overunning clutch. Manuals I have Do not say overrunning clutch. So tired of this thing. 871 is great. 981 has to warm up and can do good. Then all of sudden does its thing as in when cold. and still jerks out of gear on 5 6 7 and r1 r2. Think you told of a sprag in a earlier post and that is greek to me. So what can we do here if anything at all. Thanks for any info or give me a 5 speed. Ha

The ORC is a sprag clutch. It is one of the components engaged in R1, 5 & 6 as well as other non overdrive ratios. It would not be applied in R2 or 7.

Jumping out of gear is an interesting scenario. I'd at least have to experience that to form any kind of opinion.

With the Traction Disconnect released, engine running and tractor secured from any possible tractive movement, band adjustment is as follows:

B1 - trans in Neutral torque to 5-10 ft lbs, back off 1 turn

B2 - trans in Neutral torque to 5-10 ft lbs, back off 3/4 turn

B3- trans in 5th torque to 5-10 ft lbs, back off 3/4 turn

hope this helps

an addendum: the only difference between the adjustments on the ORC and the pre-65 DDC equipped units is that B1 is adjusted without the engine running in the DDC models.

adjustments get more diverse on the 65 and later models. different pre-torque specs, different released gear ratios, different back-offs.

Larry, seems the same all around to me on adjustments. Looking at my manual I did not do anything wrong on justments. Reverse does not go at all when cold. This tractor,981, did set for a while. Should of never bought it. Thanks for more input.

engine is running 800 RPM with trans at normal op temp in all those adjustments except B1 on the DDC.

If I had to take a wild guess, I'd throw a new control valve body at the 981 and see if that doesn't fix it. Those are available on eBay quite frequently or I'd sell you one shipped for 75 bucks. You'd need to find gaskets locally.

Larry. I Reworked the control valve Polished inside and also valves and put in the better valves no grooves and all. Adjusted valves like I think I should. More in depth stuff on the control body. Thanks for input. Also if 5' tiller jumps out of its job and walks on top is pto clutch gone? Thanks

If it's not driving the tiller, it could be anything from PTO cable adjustment to low pressure to shot clutch.

Dave, just out of curiosity, where are you located?

I'm in Harrisonville, Mo. 50 miles south of KC. Have been to Sylvan Grove and Tipton hunting. Also on pto I, accidentilly, had it in 3rd gear and tiller dug fine at about 1500 rs. Bogged engine a little but not bad. Thanks
