his pto was jumping out of gear, not staying engaged.. and now not engaging.

if it was a simple stuck pto section.. he could shift it into engaged position with machine off, and then run it.

don't sound like that's the case though.

It is still a good thing to know what model one has so if there are thing that could come into play it makes it easier for us to help them

I have seen some very odd problems over the years and a simple bad bearing or snap ring can and will cause some very odd problems from time to time. Like on my 1980 Chev lock out hubs having the snap ring in the wrong place it has two place makes it so the lock out will not lock in
