Im looking at a tractor decals 801 SOS its all gold except the transmission that is red and a 4 speed. I assume it's a factory change out. what Im trying to fing out if it is a gold demo ser numbers on trans say 841 83100 (still checking the serial to make shure it's not 63100. any ideas :?:

Def not a factory change out, factory change out was because of a recall and was still a SOS transmission with updates. Post some pictures if possible. Does the tractor have a PTO lever behind the left running board? While it may be physically possible to bolt a 4 speed in place of an SOS, the SOS rear axle housing would not have a PTO lever behind the left running board.

There are no 841 gold demonstrators. All were x7/81 models.

The transmission in the tractor mentioned, if changed, was changed by a previous owner, not by the Ford factory. If it was once a gold demonstrator, the serial number went with the S-O-S transmission if and when it was removed.

It could originally have been an 881 that has been convertyed to an 841 by way of a transmission swap but there is no way to verify such at this point.

x2 Somebody ruined a good gold demo by removing the original SOS transmission and replacing it with a four speed. That fact that it may have originally been gold is now not a factor in its current value.

by what I can tell it was a 881 gold demo tractor that someone installed a 4 speed trans in

Can"t see enough of the back of the hood and dash sheetmetal area, but if the 4 speed was swapped into a gold demo that originally had an SOS, there would be a square opening in the back of the dash where the SOS shifter used to be.

Hello Clovis , You have what is LEFT OF A GOLD DEMO the original transmission is GONE AS IS THE ORIGINAL SERIAL NUMBER as would any extra value of being a Gold Demo if someone wanted it . No serial number means no proof(other than the original Gold Paint) . The four speed that is in it does belong in it , it WAS NOT INSTALLED BY THE FACTORY under no circumstance and it was not a factory change out or anything else , it does belong there and the serial number does not mean anything at all , except to the tractor that the four speed came out of . IF you were lucky enough to find a Gold Transmission with a serial number and 881 model number stamped on it you could put the tractor back together and nobody could prove or disprove that it was the original transmission for that tractor , except for us that saw it here . I also have two Gold Demo's and have been researching them for years , the most common ones are the 871's and the 881's then the 971's and the 981's . The 671's and the 681's are more rare as are the 771's but still rarer are the 1811 , 1871 and 1881 Heavy Duty Industrials . Probably the rarest would be a 571 or 581 Offset tractor if one was ever built , but there is no proof either way . Thanks Tony

The good news is I don't own just doing homework the last thing I need is another project. Thank to everybody for their input. This forum is great. I do have a question of whats up with the hose coming from the hydraulic pump bleed bact to the resivior ? i dont see a valve on it.

joe

Hello Joe , Since the port on top of the pump is also pressure not just to bleed the pump and the port on the side of the rear axle housing is test port for pressure , I would assume he has a leak in the hydraulic tube through the trans case and hose is just a quick way around the problem . I never tried that but it should work if the pump port to the trans is plugged . Thanks Tony

Hello Pat , Judging by the Gold Paint on everything except the Trans. I would say everything else is original and correct . Personally I would build a Red Warranty Transmission for that tractor leave the rest of the Gold Paint and decals intact and just put it back together that way and then install an Elenco kit on it and take it to the shows as is because the paint really does look nice for being 50 years old . Without the serial number the only way to prove it is a real Gold is the paint plus they are only original once . Thanks Tony

I'm a novice at this but am trying to teach my daughter the value of things and ford tractors are a good place to start. She and I have started on this journey and have spent time hauling tractors hundreds of miles and learning things together and I thank all of you for your help.
