Ford 600 differential drain/fill plugs

Hello All,

I recently purchased a Ford 600 series tractor. I decided to change all of the fluids (except hydraulic, for now) When I opened the differential drain plug absolutely nothing came out. It was dry. I then opened the top fill plug and the plug on the left side of the differential too. When I opened the left side plug oil started to pour out of the left side plug. Seemed the differential was full.

In short, I'm stumped. How can oil be pouring out the side plug and nothing out of the bottom drain plug of the differential? Am I missing something here?

I did put back the drain plug and topped off the differential oil until it started pouring out of the side drain again.

Are you sure you didn't open the side plug on the tranny and not the diff? They are seperate on that series tractor.

He says that he added more fluid to the differential fill hole afterwards and fluid came out of the side hole, so I assume he had the correct level check hole open.

Long time since I posted but you were right. It sure was a dirty one. All cleaned up now. Runs well.
