testing light switch and fuel sending unit 4610

is there a way to test the light switch and sending unit while there not in and hooked up. i tried the light switch with a batterie charger and light tester. in certain postions the light tester would light up. does that mean its good or doesnt mean anything. same with the sending unit i hooked up a batterie charger and tested it with the test light wich also lit up. also when i pulled the sending unit out of the tank andshook it out to patch the leak a brass little needle valve kinda looking thing and a small sprin that fits on perfect then a brass washer thing with a rubber ring the a smaller brass washer thing came out of the tank. im pretty sure they go to the sending unit but i have no idea where. i hope i at least make enough sense for someone to know what it is if not let me know i will post pics. also came out of the tank was a accordian part to a funnel a stick and 2 little filter screens for the shut off valve. i assume 1 vibrated off after awhile but where the heck did the second one come from. assuming someone musta switched the shut off at one time maybe.

This is where decent multimeters come in real handy....
The fuel gauge is easy to test with the ohm function of the meter. Hold one lead on the base and the other on the spade or isolated terminal, then move the float through it's range. You should see it move fairly evenly from mabey 50 ohm at full to 250 ohm at the other end. If you get a range something like that it's fine.

Likewise with the light switch... I usually use the diote check/audible function on my meter... one lead on the supply terminal and the other on the load terminal... and switch it. Will beep if it works. Resistance should be '0' if it's good and 'OL' if it's not....

I dont know much about the multi meter but see the tractor is at boces where my son is working on it so he has it the guage there so ill send it back with hime to test them there. I will see if i can do the switch here. Would a the cheap harbor freight meter be sufficiant. I got a bunch of free of them. Do you hppen to know where them little extra pieces go. Im thinking it will be fine with out them if they even did go to it. Cant see what else they came off of

Yes, you can use the cheap meters. They probably won't have an audible feature to allow you to 'beep' a connection... but just use the ohm feature and when you have good solid connection the meter will read '0' as opposed to 'OL' when the circuit is open.
The parts in the tank could be anything... I'd just dump them out. If the sender is reading within range I wouldn't worry about it. If it's not there isn't much you can do about it other than replace it.

My 4610-II with a bolt-on sensor has a small metal clip under one of the attaching bolts to ground the sensor to the tank. It is easy to lose and $15 from CNH. If you have the older twist-lock retainer you won"t have it.

does anyone know where they can get just the fuel guage itself for the 4610. i belive mine is bad it is stuck on way past full all the time. does that sound like a bad guage to you. cnh is $95 for the guage and you can get the whole cluster for $100 online.
