861 Starter Pushbutton

Noticed more frequently I have to push the starter switch a few times before tractor will turn over and start. I was figuring the pushbutton needs to be replaced. Anything else I need to check before I change it out? There's no relay click or anything when pushed the first time or two. Does that whole cover need to come off to change that pushbutton??? Looks like a nut on the bottom of it in the parts diagram.

I think its the same setup as my 960, if so the top cover has to come off.
There is a nut on the bottom and a washer that has a tab bent up to keep the
nut from coming off and falling into the transmission.
Shift lever comes off first, then the cover will slide up off.
Shift lever doesn't always come off easily either.
New gaskets are available for a few bucks.
You could try spraying it with some contact cleaner first to see if that will work.
Be careful not to get it on the paint!

Our 851 did that about 15 years ago, and I
discovered that if I ran the shift lever down and
up through neutral while kinda raking it close to
the forward side (third, first, fourth side), the
starter would engage. This method has worked for 15
years - maybe because the tractor knows there is a
new starter button on the workbench!

Your starter button may be a little loose and not making a good connection to ground.
Holding it forward would twist it slightly until it hit the D shape in the cover.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it! :)

Ground the starter switch wire to the transmission case to check this. This will prove the switch is ok or not.Nasty job to change out the switch and still have the problem. You could have a poor battery cable connection.
